What is police profiling? It's where the police put together a 'character sheet' or
dossier on a person by using the facts they have gathered. If you walk into a room that
is painted pink, in the corner is a white bed with a few teddy bears, next to it is a
nightstand with a Barbie horse next to a frilly lamp, and finally there are two Nancy
Drew books on the floor, you might say: "This room belongs to a very feminine little
girl who reads mystery novels and likes horses." You can also guess the age range of
5-11 years old. After that, girls usually do not keep their rooms pink because it
becomes "lame" or in other words, not cool.
How do you learn to profile people? There are a lot of various ways to do this. Some
times you can take a course, if you can find one. A lot of authors (published or no)
make great profilers because they have to develop their characters. Psychologists and
sociologists are usually the profilers for the FBI. You can pick up the art of profiling
by using logic and common sense.
Want a quick start for learning to profile? When you go into a room you are unfamiliar
with or don't see often, ask yourself the following questions:
1) Who's room is this?
On the bad side of profiling...The police or feds may use it on you. They're probably
better at profiling then you. Why? Cause it's their job. So, be aware of what
you do and what you leave behind. You might just leave a big sign that says 'hey,
so and so is a super hero' without realizing it. So please keep this in mind before
leaving a fingerprint or your signature throwing star behind.
